What can atlases and road maps in the age of navigation devices? How To Cars has tested eight card collections!
WDo you still need street maps? My colleagues are amazed when I say that when I travel, I often switch off the navigation system and navigate the good old street atlas. Better: let me navigate. Because my wife tells me, with the map on her knees, where to go. More friendly than the sat nav and always ready to make a detour when the road is more pleasant or a beautiful place lures.
On the quality and appearance of the cards was important
So we wanted to know: which atlas is the best? And ordered eight atlases. Unfortunately, the shell atlas is missing. Because the current issue is out of print and the new is not yet available. For the others, we focused on the quality and appearance of the cards: how big is the font, how rich in contrast are the drawings? How clear is the distinction between roads and landscape? Together with the location search and the extras, but also the binding of the cards came out quickly: If the cards are good, it depends on the search system, so the interaction of maps and place register. In the end, the winner is Michelin. He has less extras than the top dog of the ADAC. But he offers the best maps and the best overview. In the gallery: eight car atlases and road maps in the test!
Conclusion of editor Stefan Szych: I like driving with electronic Navis. On vacation or on the weekend, I also grab the road map, orient myself in the region and try spontaneously small streets, which would not recommend the sat nav. That's how I rediscover the world. The goal I come anyway.
